In the U.S., over 46 million people live in rural areas, many of which face significant barriers to healthcare. Limited providers, long travel distances, and financial constraints leave these communities underserved. Health Resource Institutes (HRIs) have taken up the challenge, developing innovative telehealth programs to address these disparities and foster healthier schools and communities.
Telemedicine is one key solution, leveraging technology to bring care directly to patients. A 2022 survey by RockHealth revealed that 73% of rural communities used telemedicine services, highlighting its critical role in bridging healthcare gaps. However, implementing telehealth effectively requires not just the right technology, but also thoughtfully designed medical workstations.
One of our clients, a Health Science Center affiliated with a major university, sought to implement a state-funded telehealth initiative to serve 750 locations across their state. Their goal: deliver equitable healthcare to rural schools with a mobile solution tailored to diverse needs. Existing setups, which involved basic desks and diagnostic equipment, fell short—failing to address mobility, security, and usability challenges.
At First Products, we pride ourselves on bringing visions to life. For this initiative, we undertook a comprehensive assessment of the client’s needs, resulting in a custom telehealth solution that redefined care delivery.
To meet the client’s goals, we developed a height-adjustable, non-powered mobile cart equipped with:
Secure technology integration: Lockable mounts for tablets and diagnostic tools to ensure data security and prevent theft.
Mobility: Compact design with robust casters for navigating various surfaces, from carpet to sidewalks.
User adaptability: Sit-to-stand functionality accommodating users of all ages, from pre-K students to adults.
Future-proofing: Scalable designs to support inevitable technology upgrades.
The carts also featured enhancements like integrated speakers, vanity lights for improved interactions, and carefully managed storage for diagnostic tools. Importantly, the aesthetic design created a calming presence, enabling seamless and comfortable telehealth experiences.
A major challenge was the timeline: delivering 750 mobile carts to diverse locations within four months. Our team coordinated closely with the client’s IT department, logistics partners, and local hubs to ensure smooth deployment. Weekly Zoom calls kept all parties aligned, while white-glove delivery services ensured each cart arrived fully assembled, ready for immediate integration.
The project’s success highlights what’s possible through collaboration and innovation. These telehealth carts are now improving care access for underserved schools, providing better health outcomes and peace of mind for communities. Our Perfect Fit Process allowed us to deliver a solution that addressed every detail, from usability to security, within the client’s timeline.
